College students aspiring to study medicine were given a valuable taste of the real medical school admissions process last week as the College hosted its annual Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) mock event. The MMI is the most widely used interview format for medical school entry in the UK, typically consisting of 8–10 short stations, each lasting around five minutes and led by a different interviewer. Candidates rotate through scenarios designed to test a wide range of skills essential for a future in medicine.

To replicate this experience as authentically as possible, the College welcomed an impressive panel of guests from the local medical community. These included professors of medical ethics, members of the General Medical Council Board, and experienced GPs with decades of service. Many visiting interviewers commented on the enthusiasm, maturity and professionalism shown by the students throughout the day.

The mock MMI forms part of the Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary (MDV) Science pathway within the College’s High Performers Programme, an ambitious and highly tailored support programme designed to help students succeed and progress to the most competitive universities and degree courses. The programme offers targeted preparation, expert guidance and enrichment opportunities to ensure students are fully equipped for demanding application processes. During the mock MMI, students were assessed across key areas commonly examined in real medical school interviews. These included roleplay and communication skills, motivation for studying medicine, ethical reasoning and decision-making, knowledge and insight into the NHS, teamwork, and a range of personal attributes vital for a successful medical career.

The College plans to continue strengthening its links with medical professionals in the community, recognising the immense value these partnerships bring to students at this crucial stage in their academic journeys.
