Six students from Birkenhead Sixth Form College proudly represented the College at the National Finals of the European Youth Parliament (EYP), held at Liverpool Hope University’s Hope Park Campus from 28th to 31st August 2025.
The four day event brought together some of the brightest young minds from schools and colleges across the UK, all of whom had succeeded in their regional competitions. For the fourth year running, Birkenhead Sixth Form College secured its place at the prestigious National Finals, a reflection of the College’s consistent excellence and ambition.
Students immersed themselves in a challenging and rewarding programme, working in international-style committees with peers from across the country. They took part in team-building activities, drafted resolutions, and delivered speeches in the General Assembly, debating issues of real global importance such as immigration, the gender pay gap, post-Brexit Britain, human rights protections within the EU, and homelessness.
Beyond the debates, the event was a transformative experience. Students strengthened their confidence, resilience, and leadership skills, while also gaining a taste of university life. Evenings were filled with energy and camaraderie, with a quiz night and the Euro Concert talent show celebrating the creativity and spirit of the participants.
Among the successes, Birkenhead Sixth Form College student Charlie was chosen as one of just 21 participants, out of 140, to attend an international EYP session in Cork, Republic of Ireland, in July 2026. Charlie’s achievement follows a proud tradition at the College, for the last four years, Politics students at the College have been selected for international sessions across Europe, from Romania and Belgium to Germany and, most recently, Finland, where former Head Student Sam represented the UK this summer.
Jane Cavanagh, the College’s Politics teacher, praised the students, saying:
"I am delighted that Charlie was selected for the International session in Ireland but I am equally proud of the rest of the team and the way they rose to the challenge of debating such complex and important issues. Their passion, confidence, and commitment were truly inspiring. Opportunities like this don’t just develop academic skills, they give our young people the belief that they can shape the future."
These achievements highlight not only the students’ talent and dedication, but also the College’s mission to create life changing opportunities that broaden horizons and inspire young people to see themselves as leaders on both national and international stages.
