Exploring Pathways in Computing, Games, and Music Production
As part of their end of year work related experience days, Year 1 BTEC IT students recently had the opportunity to take part in two exciting university visits designed to support their progression into higher education and digital careers.
Across two days, students engaged in hands-on workshops, university-level taster sessions, and insightful campus tours to help them explore potential pathways beyond College.
Edge Hill University: Computing Taster Day
22 students experienced a Computing Taster Day at Edge Hill where they could choose between two themed workshops: Games Development or Cyber Security.
In the Games Development session, students used Unity to prototype a small 3D game, giving them valuable insight into the technical and creative aspects of game creation.
In the Cyber Security session, students worked with simulation tools to explore how to detect and prevent network attacks — an essential skill in today’s digitally connected world.
The day also included a campus tour to explore the university’s modern facilities and vibrant student spaces, a lecture on applying for computing-related courses, including key tips on navigating the UCAS process, and a Q&A session with current students, offering advice on how to choose the right course and university.
SAE Institute Liverpool – Games and Music Taster
The following day, 17 students visited SAE Liverpool, a global creative media institute known for its industry-standard facilities and specialist courses.
Games Design students explored the process of concept creation and even pitched their own game ideas to SAE staff, meanwhile, Music Production students took part in a studio session, getting hands-on experience with professional recording equipment in a real working environment.
Both workshops allowed students to explore highly specialised areas of interest, helping them to better understand the skills, tools, and creative thinking involved in these dynamic industries.
Supporting Future Ambitions
These visits form part of the College’s wider Careers Programme, which is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to make informed decisions about their futures. The programme offers a structured blend of careers education, employer encounters, one-to-one guidance, and practical support with progression routes. From university visits and Careers Fairs, the Careers Programme ensures students are well-prepared for both higher education and the world of work.
Students not only had a chance to gain new technical skills, but also received excellent guidance on, writing strong personal statements for UCAS applications, understanding degree options and course content, and gaining confidence in applying to higher education.
