Image of Teacher at Birkenhead Sixth Form College takes on 1,000-mile challenge to support Maggie’s Wirral

Alan, Head of Art at Birkenhead Sixth Form College is embarking on an extraordinary endurance challenge to raise funds and awareness for Maggie’s Wirral.

Alan has set himself the goal of running 1,000 miles in 100 days, covering 10 miles every single day. His challenge is inspired by a powerful statistic that deeply resonated with him.

After watching a television programme highlighting cancer in the UK, Alan learned that approximately 1,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every day in England. While figures like this are often heard, he was struck by how difficult it is to truly grasp the scale behind the number.

Determined to make that statistic more tangible, Alan is choosing to run 1,000 miles in 100 days, each mile representing one of the individuals diagnosed every day.

The challenge began on 2nd April and will culminate on the final day of term, marking a significant and symbolic finish to what promises to be an incredible journey of resilience, determination and community support.

Speaking about his motivation, Alan explained that numbers alone can sometimes feel distant, but this challenge is about bringing awareness to the real people behind them. Through his efforts, he hopes to encourage reflection, conversation, and support for those affected by cancer.

Alan is raising funds for Maggie’s Wirral, a charity that provides vital support for people living with cancer, as well as their families and friends. Maggie’s Centres, located alongside NHS hospitals, offer welcoming spaces where individuals can access practical advice, emotional support and a sense of community during incredibly difficult times.

In the spirit of community, Alan is also inviting students, staff and the wider College community to get involved by joining him for parts of his journey, whether running or walking, to help raise funds and show support.

Those wishing to support Alan’s challenge and donate to Maggie’s Wirral can do so here.

This remarkable challenge not only highlights Alan’s dedication and resilience, but also reflects the College’s commitment to supporting meaningful causes and coming together to make a difference.
