Image of Students inspired through comprehensive Careers programme at College

Students at College are being empowered to aim high and explore their futures through an ambitious and wide-ranging Careers Guidance Programme designed to inform, support and inspire every step of their journey.

At the heart of the programme is a commitment to ensuring students feel confident, prepared and excited about life beyond College—whether that leads to higher education, apprenticeships or the world of work. Through a carefully structured calendar of events and opportunities, students are given direct access to universities, employers and industry professionals, helping to bring their aspirations to life.

Throughout the year, students engage in a rich variety of experiences. From Higher Education Week and University visits to specialist events such as the Law Fair, Healthcare Fair, Psychology Fair and Care Services Fair, learners are able to explore a wide range of career pathways in meaningful and practical ways.

Programmes such as the four-week Law Visiting Speaker series, featuring a Magistrate, Judge, Solicitor and Barrister, provide invaluable real-world insight, allowing students to deepen their understanding of professional sectors and develop the skills needed for future success. Meanwhile, initiatives including the Healthcare Professionals Programme, NHS Cadets and Pathways Speaker events connect students directly with experts working in their chosen fields.

A key part of the College’s offer is its ambitious High Performers Programme, an enhanced and tailored support programme designed to help academically able students realise their full potential and successfully progress to the most competitive university courses and career pathways. These pathways include Oxbridge, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary (MDV), STEM, Russell Group universities, the Arts and degree apprenticeships.

Through this programme, students benefit from enrichment opportunities including visits to leading institutions such as Cambridge, Oxford and Lancaster, alongside expert-led talks and preparation for competitive applications. As part of the Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary (MDV) pathway, students also take part in a Mock Medical MMI.

The MMI, widely used for UK medical school entry, typically involves 8–10 short interview stations designed to assess a range of key skills. To replicate this experience, the College welcomed a panel of medical professionals, including professors of medical ethics, General Medical Council members and experienced GPs.

Visiting interviewers praised the enthusiasm, maturity and professionalism shown by students, highlighting the strength of their preparation and ambition.

Events such as Futures Day bring everything together, with over 70 organisations, universities and employers joining the College to support first year students as they begin thinking about life beyond College.

From industry-specific career talks to higher education guidance, the event encourages students to reflect on their goals, explore their options and take informed next steps towards their future careers. Talks from leading professionals, including experts in environmental science from Welsh Mountain Zoo and journalists from ITV News, offer a behind-the-scenes look at real-world careers, helping students to better envision their own futures.

This comprehensive approach is underpinned by expert Careers Advisors who provide personalised, impartial guidance, ensuring every student receives the support they need to make confident decisions.

The impact of this work is clear. In 2025, Birkenhead Sixth Form College students achieved unprecedented success in their A Level, BTEC and T Level results, surpassing the previous year’s outstanding performance and cementing the College’s position among the top three sixth form colleges in the country.

These achievements are opening doors to some of the UK’s most competitive universities, prestigious apprenticeships and high-quality employment opportunities. An impressive 51% of students achieved the highest A Level grades, securing places on courses including medicine, law and psychology at leading institutions, while 538 students progressed to their first choice university.

The College’s Careers Guidance Programme is aligned with the Gatsby Benchmarks and has been recognised with the prestigious Quality in Careers Standard Award, reflecting its commitment to excellence. The programme continues to evolve, ensuring students are equipped with the skills, knowledge and ambition to succeed.

Through its dynamic and forward-thinking careers provision, College is not just preparing students for their next step, it is opening doors to a future full of possibility.
