Seventeen enthusiastic Politics students embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to Washington, D.C. The trip, centred around U.S. politics, offered a rich mix of historical learning, cultural discovery, and classic American experiences, leaving students with unforgettable memories and a deeper understanding of American democracy.

The itinerary was packed from start to finish, with highlights that brought political theory to life. Students toured the U.S. Capitol Building, home to Congress, and visited the National Archives to view America’s most treasured documents: the original Constitution and Declaration of Independence. They also stood outside the iconic White House, connecting their classroom studies to the very heart of American political power. Another major highlight was a poignant visit to Ford’s Theatre, the site of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, offering students a deep reflection on one of America’s most pivotal historical moments.

One of the most atmospheric experiences came on a night-time bus tour of D.C.'s historic monuments. Students visited the Lincoln Memorial, famously known as the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and a memorable scene in the film Forrest Gump.

Beyond politics, the group embraced the American lifestyle. Some students cheered on the Boston Red Sox vs. Washington Nationals in a lively baseball game, while others enjoyed a shopping trip. Food also played a starring role, from breakfast pancakes and waffles in classic diners to lunch at Raising Cane’s and dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe, the group sampled a variety of classic American dishes.

The trip wrapped up with a visit to the scenic Georgetown district, where students enjoyed a final shopping spree. Before heading home, they gathered on the infamous steps featured in the horror classic The Exorcist, a unique photo opportunity that blended film history with D.C.’s eclectic charm.

The visit reflects Birkenhead Sixth Form College’s strong commitment to providing enriching extracurricular opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. Trips like this not only enhance subject knowledge but also help students grow in confidence, cultural awareness, and independence. These are key values supported throughout the College’s wider enrichment programme.

The Washington D.C. trip was widely regarded as a valuable and rewarding experience. Students gained valuable insights into American politics, from visiting historic landmarks to experiencing everyday American culture, the College Politics trip to Washington D.C. combined learning with real-world exploration.
