University of Warwick Spring Break Residential
A group of first-year students from Birkenhead Sixth Form College recently took part in a prestigious four-day residential as part of the Pathways to Engineering programme, held over the Spring Break at University of Warwick, one of the UK’s leading universities.
The students were selected for this opportunity through their involvement in the Sutton Trust’s Pathways to Engineering initiative, which aims to widen access to top-tier engineering careers for academically high-achieving students.
During the residential, the students experienced life on campus, attending engineering lectures, participating in social activities, and networking with Sutton Trust alumni currently working in the engineering sector. These alumni represented major companies including UMEX, British Gas, Jaguar Land Rover, and Mercedes-Benz, offering invaluable insight into the real-world applications of engineering study.
One of the key features of the programme was a group challenge in which students worked in teams of ten to design an ecologically-sound secondary school. The project culminated in a presentation to a panel of professional civil engineers who judged the innovative ideas and teamwork demonstrated by each group. Throughout the experience, BSFC students enhanced both their academic and practical abilities while forming valuable connections with peers.
This residential has further fuelled the students’ aspirations to pursue engineering at university and beyond, reinforcing BSFC’s commitment to broadening horizons and supporting students in reaching their full potential.
We are incredibly proud of our students for representing BSFC with maturity and confidence while engaging with peers from schools and colleges across England.
