Birkenhead Sixth Form College offers an exciting and dynamic Psychology A Level course that gives students a unique opportunity to delve into the science of human behaviour and mental processes. With a mix of academic rigor and real-world relevance, the course is designed to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and those around us.

Students studying Psychology at the College explore a wide range of fascinating topics, including Social influence; Memory; Psychopathology; Attachment; Approaches in psychology; Bio-Psychology ; Research methods; Cognition and Development; Schizophrenia; Forensic Psychology; Issues and debates. Students also have the chance to get involved in practical experiments with their peers, bringing theories and concepts to life through hands-on investigation and research activities.

The Psychology department is the largest in the College, with nearly 700 students choosing to study the subject, making it a vibrant and diverse academic community. The team is made up of 12 Psychology specialists, offering a wealth of expertise and support to students. Additionally, the College boasts its very own Psychology building, equipped with nine spacious, state-of-the-art classrooms featuring interactive TV screens to support a modern and engaging learning environment.

Learning beyond the classroom

Studying Psychology at Birkenhead Sixth Form College extends far beyond textbooks and lessons. Psychology students benefit from subject-specific trips, including visits to Liverpool’s ‘Quirky Quarter’, and to London.

Looking ahead, the department is planning a trip to Krakow and Auschwitz in the next academic year, directly supporting curriculum learning on Social Influence and historical psychological perspectives.

Enriching events and immersive learning

One of the highlights of the Psychology calendar is the annual Psychology Careers Fair, a vibrant event held at the College that brings together universities and industry professionals to help students explore their next steps. The fair provides invaluable access to a range of higher education providers and career pathways in psychology and related fields, including counselling, mental health, neuroscience, and more.
