Image of Swedish educators visit Birkenhead Sixth Form College

Birkenhead Sixth Form College was delighted to welcome educators from Borgarskolan in Gävle, Sweden, for a visit focused on collaboration, networking and the sharing of educational best practice.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity for staff from both institutions to compare and contrast the British and Swedish education systems, discuss different approaches to teaching and learning, and explore future opportunities for international partnership.

During their time at the College, our visitors observed a range of lessons, including English Language, English Literature, Environmental Science and Chemistry. They were particularly interested in the interactive nature of teaching at Birkenhead Sixth Form College, noting how students actively engage in discussions and learning activities while teachers continue to lead and guide the lesson.

Our Swedish visitors were full of praise for the students they met throughout the day, describing them as “lovely” and commenting positively on the welcoming atmosphere across the College. They were impressed by students’ engagement, confidence and willingness to contribute during lessons.

The English Language and English Literature sessions generated particularly interesting professional discussions. Our visitors explained that, in Sweden, language and literature are often taught in a more integrated way, with students studying language, books and speaking activities alongside one another. In contrast, they observed how English Language and English Literature are distinct subjects within the British system, each with its own focus and specialist content.

Head of English Literature, Jon, discussed how English Language explores how language works, while Literature students are also introduced to elements of language analysis to deepen their understanding of texts. These conversations highlighted the different but equally valuable approaches taken in each country.

Our Swedish visitors commented on the English language lesson they observed and were particularly impressed by the emphasis placed on classroom discussion, student collaboration, and detailed language analysis. Sharing these perspectives allowed staff from both institutions to reflect on their own practice and gain new ideas to take back to their classroom

Assistant Principal, Claire Morgan, commented:

“I found the morning particularly interesting as it allowed us to reflect on our own practices while learning from the experiences and perspectives of our Swedish colleagues. The open exchange of ideas highlighted innovative approaches to teaching and learning and encouraged meaningful professional dialogue.

Building international links such as these is important. Collaboration enables educators to share best practice, learn from one another, and develop new ideas that can enhance outcomes for students.

International visits such as this are an important part of Birkenhead Sixth Form College’s commitment to continuous improvement, professional development and global collaboration. By learning from different education systems, staff can continue to enhance the experience and opportunities available to students.

We would like to thank our visitors from Borgarskolan for visiting and look forward to continuing our professional relationship in the future.
