Image of Investment of £1.6m for area’s most successful sixth form

Birkenhead Sixth Form College is investing over one-and-a-half million pounds in expanding multiple facilities to accommodate increasing demand for student numbers.

Having bucked the national trend of lower A Level grades this summer compared to 2020 and 2021, the College’s students smashed expectations and succeeded in a rise of 15% high grades to more than 60% achieving A* - B grades or equivalent.

The £1.6 investment also includes £750,000 granted by the Department for Education in acknowledgement of the College’s need to increase capacity, already having over 1500 students.

A new classroom building will open in Spring 2023, housing six new state-of-the-art classrooms and three new study spaces, with the larger building replacing existing constructions within the college campus.

Also included in the investment is all-new kitchen facilities and hot food offerings, science equipment and new labs as the College starts our new Science T Level course, and an extension to the multigym for more health and fitness activities.

Principal at Birkenhead Sixth Form College, Mike Kilbride, said: “Our facilities at the College are already superb for our body of students, but this investment will once again contribute to the incredible sixth form experience that our students have.

“Our results this year stood out on the national scene, and for yet another year, demand for places was incredibly high, pushing us to the very limits of our capacity. The expansion to study facilities follow on from our new building in 2019 on campus being tremendously successful and it allowed us to house the hugely popular Psychology department across the nine new classrooms. This new building will act similarly.”

Mike continued: “We would like to thank the Department for Education for their recognition of our strong reputation across the country. This has allowed us the chance to invest in a broad range of facilities and equipment which will further enhance the life opportunities for young people in the area.”
