Enrichment Officer, Rowena Lovatt organised a Volunteers Fair for students to gain advice and guidance on how they can get involved with 15 different organisations in their spare time. Organisations offering opportunities both locally and internationally were represented.

Rowena highlighted how valuable volunteering can be alongside academic study, commenting, “Volunteering is a fantastic way of developing new skills, gaining hands on experience and strengthening your C.V. or personal statement.”

There were representatives from the Scouts, Girl Guides, Hype Youth centre, “Options for supported living”, and the Blind and Partially sighted Centre offering voluntary opportunities helping young children, teenagers or people with learning disabilities or sight difficulties. Students signed up to gain retail experience with Claire House Children’s Hospice, RNIB and Cancer Research UK. The Police, Lifeboat Institute and Sea cadets were seeking trainees. International voluntary opportunities were on offer from the HQ Coaching Centre.

Rowena was pleased to see that student attendance to the event was high adding, “It was great to see students taking an active approach to gaining experience, whether it be to further their future careers or explore a new interest. Taking part in volunteering opportunities will really make them stand head and shoulders above competition for Higher Education places, so it was wonderful to see so many students taking advantage of this opportunity.”
