About the Subject

Edexcel’s Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Business has been designed to provide the opportunity to advance to a university degree in an appropriate vocational subject or to enter employment.  BTEC qualifications provide a more practical, real-world approach to learning alongside a key theoretical background.  Students will study real-life work-based case studies and complete projects and assignments that contribute to achieving each unit studied.

The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma Business is a vocational alternative to A Level's and is 100% coursework - there are no exams in this qualification.  They have been introduced to enable students to follow a vocational, or career-related, course after the age of 16 instead of just the traditional academic school subjects.

The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma qualification is equivalent to 1 A Level grades A – E but is assessed using pass (A level equivalent to grades D to E), merit (A level equivalent to grade C) and distinction (A level equivalent to grades A and B).

It has the same value as A Levels and is accepted by Employers and most Universities.  During the course you will investigate a wide range of areas – finance, people in business, marketing and customer services.  In year 1 you will study 3 units:

Unit Name Type of
Assessment

1 The Business Environment Coursework December
2 Business Resources Coursework March
3 Introduction to Marketing Coursework June

General Information

The course focuses on skills development, this means that you will learn how to manage your time, prioritise activities, prepare reports and presentations, use initiative and creativity skills, work in teams, investigate and research different businesses and discuss business problems.  You will also visit businesses to find out to find out how they operate.

All of your work will be marked by your teachers and then moderated through an Edexcel verification system.  Therefore this course appeals to students who prefer coursework rather than exams.

What Next?

Business Studies is now highly regarded by the great majority of universities as an excellent foundation for degree study.  Business Studies has been one of the fastest growing university subjects and is certainly one of the largest.  Students can study a general business course, whilst others choose to specialise in a specific area of business like marketing or accountancy.

Business Studies is always a useful subject, as most people will either end up working in a business or running their own.  This course will give you a good grounding in becoming a manager or to owning your own business.
