Entry Requirements
Usual entry requirements to advanced courses - there are no specific subject related entry requirements for this course. You do not need to have studied Business in the past to do this course, however you must be prepared to commit 2 years to this course.
About the Subject
Business Studies gives you the opportunity to learn how organisations operate in theory and how they function in practice. You will learn about the key areas of running a business and making business decisions.
You will encounter a variety of different tasks and learning approaches. You will acquire your basic knowledge through combinations of class notes, case studies, videos, TV and practical exercises. You will learn how to apply this knowledge and make business decisions through case study materials, visits and speakers.
The Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Business is a vocational alternative to A Levels. They have been introduced to enable students to follow a vocational, or career-related, course after the age of 16 instead of just the traditional academic school subjects. The Level 3 BTEC Diploma qualification is equivalent to 2 A Levels grades A – E. At the end of the course you will graded at either a pass, merit or distinction level.
During the course you will investigate a wide range of areas - people in business, marketing and managing resources. In year 1 you will study 6 units, these will be:

General Information
The course focuses on skills development, this means that you will learn how to manage your time, prioritise activities, prepare reports and presentations, use initiative and creativity skills, work in teams, investigate and research different businesses and discuss business problems. You will also visit businesses to find out to find out how they operate.
All of your work will be marked by your teachers and then moderated through an Edexcel verification system. Therefore this course appeals to students who prefer coursework rather than exams.
The following units are the “core” this means that you must study these units first in order to pass the course.
The Business Environment (Unit 1)
This unit explores business ownership, organisation, business aims and strategies and external factors affecting business success. This unit is based on Alton Towers.
Business Resources (Unit 2)
This unit looks at the range of human, physical, technological and financial resources required in an organisation, and how the management of these resources can impact on business performance.
Introduction to Marketing (Unit 3)
This unit looks gives learners an understanding of how marketing, research, planning and the marketing mix are used by all organisations.
Business Communication (Unit 4)
This unit focuses on the collection and management of business information, and the successful communication of that information throughout a business, to ensure the future prosperity of the organisation. This unit is also based on Alton Towers and coincides with the visit.
What Next?
Business Studies is always a useful subject, as most people will either end up working in a business or running their own. This course will give you a good grounding in becoming a Manager or for owning your own business. This course can also lead onto Higher Education.
