Entry Requirements
Any student with a keen interest in sport, exercise and fitness who has mostly C’s and D’s (or equivalent) from their GCSE and/or BTEC qualifications
About the Subject
This is a new and exciting level 2 BTEC course which involves both the theoretical and practical study of sport and exercise science and is the equivalent to 4 GCSEs. It consists of 6 units of study over a 1 year period, looking at the fundamental concepts involved in health, fitness and sport

General Information
Unit 1. Students will consider the structure and function of various body systems, the role that they play and their response to exercise and training.
Unit 2. Students will look at the health and safety issues relating to sport and exercise. They will learn to identify and deal with basic sports injuries. It is also hoped that students will gain Basic First Aid certificates.
Unit 4. Students will gain knowledge of and undertake a variety of fitness tests and understand nutritional and psychological factors which affect performance. They will also be required to plan a fitness-training programme.
Unit 5. Students will learn about and acquire the practical skills that will enable them to assist/lead a sports event/activity.
Unit 6. Students will be required to demonstrate their practical skills in both a team and an individual activity. They will also show understanding of the rules and regulations and the ability to officiate in a practical activity of their choice.
Unit 14. On completion of this unit students will be able to plan, deliver and evaluate a range of exercise sessions for a variety of people.
What Next?
The recent growth in the health, fitness and leisure industries have led to a massive increase in both the career options and Further/Higher Education courses offered in this area. Students can choose to progress to level 3 courses in the same area, which includes Level 3 BTEC Diploma or AS/A2 Sport and PE which in turn may lead them into courses/careers in teaching, sport/fitness coaching, leisure/recreation management, the armed forces and sports sciences, such as physiotherapy.
