Art and Design BTEC Level 2 Diploma
Entry Requirements
Normal BSFC entry criteria for a BTEC First course. Art and Design at D grade or above and/or an enthusiasm and willingness to explore a broad range of media, materials and techniques is essential.
About the Subject
The course lasts one year and is assessed through the continual assessment of set assignments. Students will be given a broad training in the manipulation of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional media, materials and techniques and, in the latter stages of the course, will have the opportunity to work on assignments of their own choice.
All units are vocationally linked and are either simulations of briefs from the world of work or live projects. Artists, designers and craftspeople will share their expertise with students on this course.
Students will complete the following 6 units of work:
| Unit 1: 2D & 3D Visual Communication | Working with media, materials and techniques such as paint, pencil, charcoal, wire, papier mache. Adobe Photoshop. |
| Unit 2: Contextual References | Looking at the work of other artists, designers and craftspeople and using their ideas and techniques to inspire your work. |
| Unit 3: Explore & Develop Ideas | Producing a range of alternative outcomes in response to your research, trying out different materials and techniques. |
| Unit 4: Produce an Art & Design Outcome | Producing final work and evaluating it. |
| Unit 11: Working with Visual Arts Briefs | Will involve 2D project work using a range of media and processes. |
| Unit 12: 3D Design Crafts Briefs | Will involve 3D project work using a range of materials and processes. |
Students will be graded at either Pass, Merit or Distinction and will have a clear idea, as the course progresses, what level they are achieving at
General Information
The Art & Design department operates and open access policy so that all students can use the facilities and gain extra help outside of normal lessons during the day. There is also the opportunity after Christmas, to attend after college sessions
What Next?
Students progressing from this course with either a Merit or Distinction can carry on and study on either the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Art and Design or AS Art & Design at BSFC, if they wish to take their Art & Design training further.
Many BSFC students go on to higher level study and seek employment in the creative industries, one of the largest sector employers in the UK.
