The college offers wide range of courses:
Applied Science BTEC Level 2 Diploma
Entry Requirements
The BTEC Diploma a level two qualification equivalent to 4 GCSE passes. The Entry requirements are to have achieved C’s and D’s from your GCSEs and have an interest in Science as a possible career.
About the Subject
In Applied Science you will develop the skills and learn the background knowledge useful for employment in a science based industry. It can also be studied alongside other level 2 courses as a route into advanced level study.
It is a practically based subject and requires a hard-working and determined approach to study. Achievement on this course is based solely on the quality of course based assignments. There are no exams.

Each unit is made up of four different assignments which must be completed to a satisfactory standard to achieve success in that unit. Achievement is at one of three levels - Pass, Merit or Distinction. All units must be attempted to achieve an overall outcome
General Information
Chemistry Applications
In this unit you will learn the main ideas behind the applications of chemistry in industry and develop the practical skills required in the workplace. You will carry out chemistry practical investigations and develop skills such as handling of laboratory apparatus; interpreting and safely following laboratory procedures and carrying out risk analysis.
The implications of chemistry such as sustainable development, waste disposal, pollution and their effects on the environment and society are also studied.
Physical Science Applications
All scientific processes depend on energy transformations, so in this unit you will investigate different types of energy and how they interact. Industrial processes use the properties of waves and radiation, for example spectral analysis to identify chemicals, or radiation used to examine defects in materials.
Science technicians need to be familiar with the production, application and transformation of electricity so that they can handle electrical equipment safely. Learners will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of using practical devices. Many scientific applications are derived from the space programme, for example the discovery of Helium and heat resistant materials In this unit you will use instrumentation used to explore space.
Biological Systems
In this unit you will find out about the wide variety of living organisms on the earth, and how they interact with each other and the environment.
You will find out about the role of DNA in inheritance and evolution, this being applied to the study of inherited factors and conditions.
You will investigate the factors that are important for human health and the protective mechanisms of the body that play a part in the prevention of disease.
What Next?
The Level 2 BTEC First Diploma can help you into a careers in the science industry e.g. as a technician in hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturing or environmental testing. It can also provide a route into advanced level stady as well as providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills, techniques and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.
