Sport and Physical Education
Entry Requirements
Students must meet the BSFC entry criteria to advanced courses and also have achieved a grade C or better in English GCSE and grade C or better in a GCSE Science. A grade C in PE would also be beneficial but is not compulsory.
About the Subject
Sport and PE is an exciting and challenging 1 or 2 year course, consisting of practical activities and the theoretical study of sport related issues. It provides a transition for those intending to study related courses in Higher Education and for those who do not wish to go on to further study in this area, it provides a balanced, broad-based course, worthwhile in its own right.
All candidates will gain by furthering their knowledge and understanding of the importance of exercise and activity to their physical, social and mental well-being.
The coursework modules (2 and 4) also provide the opportunity for candidates to be assessed in 1 or more physical activities/sports as a performer, coach and/or official.

General Information
During the course you will undertake 2 modules in year 1 (AS) and 2 in Year 2 (A2) These areas of study will include:
- BASIC ANATOMY/PHYSIOLOGY: i.e. what makes up the different body systems and how they work/relate to each other and how they respond to training and fitness.
- ACQUISITION OF SKILL: i.e. how do we become skilled? Which are the best methods for teaching and learning?
- Opportunities for Participation: i.e. those agencies responsible for sport, recreation and PE in this country (now and in the past).
- SOCIAL ISSUES: i.e. Concepts such as Discrimination/Drugs/Commercialism in sport and their effects.
- SPORT PSYCHOLOGY: i.e. Personality, aggression, motivation and the part they play in modern sport.
- Practical performance: i.e. the performance and analysis of skills in isolation and structured practice as a player, official &/or coach.
What Next?
The recent growth in the health, fitness and leisure industries have led to a massive increase in both the career options and Higher Education courses offered in this area. Many students now go on to follow courses/careers in teaching, sport/fitness coaching, leisure/recreation management, sports development the armed forces and sports sciences, such as physiotherapy.
