Entry Requirements

You should have achieved five or more C grades or better from your GCSE qualifications and this must include a C or better in English Language. You should also be interested in a career in Health and Social Care and be committed to Care Values such as equal opportunities. 

About the Subject

GCE Health & Social Care "A" levels, are a more work related alternative to traditional ‘A’ Levels. Health and Social Care is a vocational subject which covers all the skills and concepts needed by people who work in caring jobs.

It is a good basis for anyone who wants to follow a caring career. For those hoping to become teachers it should be taken with a National Curriculum based subject at A level.

You will study clients needs and local services. The course involves aspects of human biology, sociology and psychology applied to real practical situations. You will have to find and use information from people involved with Health and Social Care Services as well as using traditional resources such as books. In fact, you wil be encouraged to use a wide range of resources, including information technology, and will develop a range of skills during the course.

This is a written exam and is worth 20% of A level

This AS unit is a mandatory unit that will be externally assessed.

Unit 2 Promoting good Health coursework 30% of A level

This AS unit is a mandatory unit that will be internally assessed.

A2 year

Unit 7 Provision of Health, Social Care and Children’s service

External coursework assignment 20% of A level

Unit 9 Working in Health and Social Care

Internal coursework assignment 30% of A level

What Next?

Most students' progress on to a range of Health related Degree or diploma courses.

Many students go on to Nurse training courses at various levels

Some go on to Occupational therapy or Physiotherapy Others pursue courses leading to qualifications in Social Work or Teaching

In short there are many related courses ranging from Health promotion to Psychology The qualification is A level and will count towards the point score of most University/College courses related or otherwise.

Some students seek employment The NHS is the largest employer in Europe and they offer a range of career opportunities. This in ddition to positions in Residential Care, GP surgeries etc
