ECDL Essentials

COURSE OUTLINE
The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is the European Union’s suggested minimum level of qualification to be held in Information Technology (IT), by people who use IT in the workplace. The ECDL scheme is available and recognised in all member states of the EU. In the UK it is administered by British Computer Society (BCS) who have split the qualification into two sections, ECDL Essentials and ECDL Extra. Microsoft Office 2003 is used in libraries. BCS Level 1 Certificate for IT Users is designed to give an initial overview of computer use for the Candidate who wishes to gain a Level 1 qualification. The course lasts for 11 sessions and comprises of 3 units:
• Unit 1 - IT Security for Users
• Unit 2 - Using the Computer and Managing Files / IT User Fundamentals
• Unit 7 - Web Browsing and Communication / Using the Internet & Email
Unit 1 covers the various security areas all users of IT need to be aware of, together with current good practice associated with the use of a computer. It is assessed through a multiple choice question paper. All other units are practical in nature and are assessed by a practical test containing some multiple choice questions.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Whilst this is not a beginner’s course it is suitable for people who already use Information and Communications Technology in the workplace, educational environment or by completion of Using Microsoft Office course.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT
Students will take 3 modular 45 minute tests. Success in all 3 will lead to the ECDL Essentials qualification. Students will be offered opportunities to re-sit any units they might fail.

RESOURCES YOU WILL NEED
Basic writing materials, we also suggest a USB memory pen / stick, which can be purchased at the college for approximately £8.00 (4GB).
